Wheat Procurement Crosses 29.7 Million Tonnes, Highest Since 2021-22
The Central government has procured over 29.7 million tonnes (297 lakh tonnes) of wheat so far in the 202526 rabi marketing season, which runs from April to June. This marks the highest wheat procurement since the 202122 season, according to official data released by the Food Corporation of India (FCI). This years procurement is up by 13.5% compared to the same period last year, with wheat purchases nearly complete across key producing states. The five major wheat-producing states Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh have all reported higher procurement figures than last year. Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi said that total procurement is likely to reach 32 to 32.5 million tonnes (320325 lakh tonnes), driven by a record harvest. The government had earlier set a procurement target of 31.2 million tonnes (312 lakh tonnes) for the current marketing season. So far, payments worth 62,346.23 crore under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme have been made to 2.27 million farmers, providing a significant boost to rural incomes. Rabi crop production also saw a healthy increase rising from 160.00 million tonnes in 202324 to 164.53 million tonnes in 202425.
