Wheat Prices May Touch ₹3000/Quintal by Diwali; Millers Federation Urges Government to Remove GST on Flour Products
New Delhi: Wheat prices are expected to rise to around ₹3000 per quintal by Diwali. Currently, wheat is trading at approximately ₹2750 per quintal, but due to anticipated increase in demand during the festive season, traders expect prices to climb to ₹2900 - ₹3000. Meanwhile, the Millers Federation of India has appealed to the government to remove the 5% GST on packaged wheat flour (atta), refined flour (maida), and semolina (suji). The federation argues that just as GST has been removed from essential products like roti, paratha, khakhra, and pizza bread, it should also be lifted from flour-based staples. According to them, this move would provide relief to consumers and strengthen the industry. Currently, demand for semolina and maida remains subdued, but it is expected to rise with the onset of the festive season. If GST is removed, FMCG and food processing companies are likely to benefit directly. Recent floods in Punjab and Haryana have slightly impacted wheat stored in the open, but overall, both government and private players have adequate stock. If needed, the government can increase market supply through the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) to stabilize prices.
