Maize Prices Continue to Decline Amid Rising Arrivals and Weak Demand

Farmers and traders are witnessing a continued downtrend in maize prices due to increasing arrivals across major markets. The recent surge in supply is exerting pressure on prices, with further declines expected in the near term. Main Market Trends: Bihar (Gulabbagh, Purnia): Maize sold at ₹2,050–₹2,200 per quintal, a decline of ₹100 compared to yesterday. Maharashtra (Sangli): ₹2,000–₹2,150, a decline of ₹50. Gujarat (Dahod): Desi maize prices stable at ₹2,225–₹2,250. Rajasthan (Jodhpur): Stable at ₹2,200–₹2,370. Detailed price observations from Rajasthan mandis include: Baran: Maize with 20–25% moisture ₹1,500–₹1,600; wet maize ₹1,200–₹1,400; 14–16% moisture ₹1,600–₹1,800; best dry maize ₹1,800–₹1,950. Kota: 25% moisture maize ₹1,650; 30% moisture ₹1,550; ordinary maize ₹2,000; maize with 14% moisture, 2% mold, and 2% damage recorded at ₹2,001 per quintal. The supply of higher moisture maize has been impacting the demand for better-quality maize, while ethanol companies are being supplied with rice by the government, further weakening maize demand. Overall, market recovery seems unlikely in the short term, and prices are expected to continue their downward trend. Current international prices show cash rates in the US at $198–199 per ton, and with shipping costs, Indian C&F prices are around $240 per ton, close to domestic levels. Ukrainian maize is at $213 per ton, making imports less advantageous for the starch industry. Domestic demand from ethanol companies and the poultry sector is also below expectations.
