Government Likely to Raise March Sugar Quota to 2.3–2.35 Million Tonnes Amid Rising Summer Demand
Temperatures rising across the country and a likely surge in demand for cold beverages, the central government may increase the monthly sugar sales quota for March 2026. According to sources, the sugar quota for the upcoming month is expected to be fixed between 2.3 and 2.35 million tonnes. Market experts note that the government had set the sugar quota at 2.25 million tonnes for February 2026. However, with temperatures expected to rise in March and the onset of the summer season, demand for sugar is likely to increase. In view of this, the government may raise the quota to ensure adequate availability in the market. It is worth mentioning that in March 2025, the government had also released a quota of 2.3 million tonnes of sugar, which helped maintain market balance. As temperatures climb, consumption of sugar by ice cream, cold drink, and other beverage manufacturers has started to increase. Industry sources believe that if the projected quota of 2.3–2.35 million tonnes is approved, it will not only help keep retail prices under control but also ensure smooth supply to industrial consumers. According to trade sources, the higher quota is expected to streamline domestic supply and reduce the possibility of unwarranted price volatility. This would provide relief to both general consumers and the food and beverage industry. An official announcement regarding the final sugar quota for March is expected soon.
