Monsoon Advances Rapidly, Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued for Several States

The Southwest Monsoon continues to strengthen across the country. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), on June 11, 2026, the monsoon advanced into several new parts of Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. It has also covered the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, along with additional areas of West Bengal and Bihar. The IMD expects the monsoon to reach parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh over the next two to three days. The active monsoon conditions have brought widespread rainfall to several states. During the past 24 hours, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was recorded over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Heavy rainfall was also reported at several places in Bihar, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. The rains have provided relief from the prevailing heat and boosted optimism among farmers ahead of the Kharif sowing season. In North India, an active western disturbance is expected to influence weather conditions until June 13. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh are likely to witness rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Strong winds ranging from 50 to 80 kmph may occur at several locations, while isolated hailstorm activity is also possible. For Uttar Pradesh, the upcoming weather pattern is particularly significant. Both eastern and western parts of the state may experience rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorm activity over the next few days. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places. The expected arrival of the monsoon in parts of the state within the next two to three days is likely to accelerate Kharif crop sowing activities. Across eastern India, widespread rainfall activity is expected to continue over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal. Heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for parts of Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Meanwhile, northeastern states including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also expected to receive significant rainfall over the coming days. The monsoon remains highly active over South India. Continuous rainfall activity is likely over Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and the Rayalaseema region. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over Kerala and Coastal Karnataka, while Telangana and Andhra Pradesh may witness thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds. With rainfall activity increasing, temperatures across Northwest India are expected to decline. According to the IMD, maximum temperatures may fall by 5 to 7 degrees Celsius by June 12, bringing much-needed relief from the intense heat. However, heatwave conditions may persist for another one or two days in parts of Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Vidarbha. Overall, the Southwest Monsoon 2026 is advancing rapidly toward central, eastern, and northern parts of the country. Rainfall activity is expected to intensify further in the coming days, benefiting agricultural operations. However, people are advised to remain alert due to the risk of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and lightning.
