Massive Surge in Soybean and Soy Meal Prices Just Before Diwali: What Should Farmers Do?

Soybean prices across major markets in India have seen a sharp increase this week. Demand from processing plants is strong, pushing rates at Mahesh Edible in Kota, Rajasthan up to ₹7,800 per quintal. Prices at the Kirti Plant in Solapur and Latur (Maharashtra) have also jumped to ₹7,400–₹7,600 per quintal, while major plants in Madhya Pradesh are buying in the ₹7,000–₹7,150 range. A big reason for this jump is the strong demand for soy meal (Soy DOC), where prices have risen by ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 per tonne, reaching up to ₹63,500 in major centers like Nagpur. Another key reason for high domestic prices is lower total production. According to the latest report by the Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA), overall national production for Kharif 2026 is estimated at 107.93 lakh tonnes. This is 2.11% lower than last year’s harvest. Because total supply is slightly less this season, processing plants are competing actively to buy good-quality seeds early, which is pushing spot prices higher. However, there are two important factors that could slow down this market rise. First, overseas markets tell a different story—futures prices on the US CBOT exchange are falling, which makes Indian exports less competitive internationally. Second, new crop supply is arriving quickly at main markets like Dhar, Ashta, and Indore, with each mandi seeing over 15,000 bags arriving daily. As more crop enters the market, local supply will increase rapidly. For farmers, the best approach right now is not to sell everything at once. Selling your harvest in small batches allows you to secure good profits at current high rates while keeping some stock in case prices go up closer to Diwali. For traders and mill owners, it is safer to buy based on direct demand rather than holding huge extra stock. While strong soy meal prices are helping profit margins for now, falling global prices and high daily market arrivals mean prices could cool down soon.
