Government estimates wheat production to increase to above 1150 lakh tonnes

The Central Agriculture Commissioner has said that during the current year, the domestic production of wheat can increase to above 1150 lakh tonnes, which is more than the government's second advance estimate of 1120.20 lakh tonnes and the fixed target of 1140 lakh tonnes. The main reason for this is the increase in the yield rate of wheat by 4-5 percent. But except Punjab-Haryana, wheat is not being procured as per plan in other states because private business firms are showing great activity in purchasing wheat. The government had estimated domestic production of wheat at 1105.50 lakh tonnes in the Rabi season of 2022-23. According to the Agriculture Commissioner, the average yield rate of wheat this year in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh is being reported to be between 26-32 quintals per acre (6.50-8.00 tonnes per hectare). The pace of harvesting in Punjab is slow this time while in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra and wheat harvesting has either been completed or has reached the final stage. On the other hand, the Director of Indian Wheat and Barley Research Institute, a Karnal-based institute, says that earlier only a few progressive farmers were able to achieve high yield rates of wheat, but this time the number of such farmers has increased significantly. Four-five positive factors contributed to this. The average yield rate in Punjab is reported to have increased by 7.5 quintals per hectare, taking it to around 5.3 tonnes per hectare. Details of other states are not yet known but it appears that the total wheat production at the national level will cross the limit of 1150 lakh tonnes. This time the sowing area of wheat increased slightly and no outbreak of crop diseases and insects was seen.
