Wheat Prices Decline as Government Announces 25 LMT Release Under OMSS

Wheat prices weakened across major markets following the Government of India's announcement to release 25 lakh metric tons (LMT) of wheat under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) to stabilize prices. Despite the overall bearish trend, Delhi wheat prices experienced a modest recovery, having already undergone a significant decline. Market activity remained subdued, as buyers showed caution in making new purchases at the current price levels. At the same time, sellers refrained from active selling at lower prices, leading to limited transaction volumes. In line with the governments directive, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) will release 25 LMT of wheat through e-auctions under OMSS (D) 2024. This measure aims to stabilize wheat prices and ensure availability for flour mills, wheat-based product manufacturers, processors, and other end-users. To address inflationary pressures in the food sector, the Department of Food and Public Distribution has set the reserve price at ₹2,325 per quintal for Fair Average Quality (FAQ) wheat and ₹2,300 per quintal for Under Relaxed Specifications (URS) wheat. These prices, which apply to crops from the RMS 2024-25 season, will remain valid until March 31, 2025.
