India produced record rice, wheat, maize in 2024-25, estimates Centre
India has set new records in the production of rice, wheat, and maize for the 2024-25 kharif season, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare's second advance estimates of major agricultural crop production. The total foodgrain production for the 2024-25 kharif season is estimated at 1,663.91 lakh tonnes, while rabi foodgrains (excluding summer crops) are expected to reach 1,645.27 lakh tonnes. Key highlights include: Kharif rice production is estimated at 1,206.79 lakh tonnes, marking a significant increase of 74.20 lakh tonnes compared to 1,132.59 lakh tonnes in 2023-24. Rabi rice is estimated at 157.58 lakh tonnes. Wheat production is projected at 1,154.30 lakh tonnes, a rise of 21.38 lakh tonnes from last year’s production of 1,132.92 lakh tonnes. Kharif maize is estimated at 248.11 lakh tonnes, with rabi maize at 124.38 lakh tonnes. Millets production is expected to reach 137.52 lakh tonnes for kharif and 30.81 lakh tonnes for rabi. Nutri/coarse cereals production is estimated at 385.63 lakh tonnes for kharif and 174.65 lakh tonnes for rabi. Tur and Gram production is estimated at 35.11 lakh tonnes and 115.35 lakh tonnes, respectively, while lentil production is expected to be 18.17 lakh tonnes. Groundnut production is estimated at 104.26 lakh tonnes for kharif and 8.87 lakh tonnes for rabi, with a notable increase in kharif groundnut compared to last year. Soybean production is estimated at 151.32 lakh tonnes, up by 20.70 lakh tonnes from the previous year's 130.62 lakh tonnes. Rapeseed and mustard production is projected at 128.73 lakh tonnes. Cotton production is estimated at 294.25 lakh bales (of 170 kg each), and sugarcane production is estimated at 4,350.79 lakh tonnes. These estimates are based on data provided by states, and the third advance estimates will incorporate the summer season’s production figures. India has three main cropping seasons: Summer, Kharif, and Rabi. Kharif crops are sown during the monsoon months of June-July and harvested in October-November. Rabi crops are sown in October-November and harvested starting from January, while summer crops are produced between the Kharif and Rabi seasons.
