Turmeric Market Update: Sowing Increases, Current Trade Slow but Price Rise Expected

Larger sowing area reported; exports show moderate growth According to reports from major turmeric-producing regions, sowing for the 2025-26 season has been carried out on a significantly larger area compared to last year. States like Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu have shown increased interest in turmeric cultivation, raising hopes for a higher crop yield in the upcoming season. Increase in Sowing Area In Maharashtra and the Nizamabad region, turmeric sowing has increased by 30-35%, while Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have reported a 20-25% increase. So far, the weather has remained favorable for the crop, which further supports the possibility of a good harvest. The new crop is expected to start arriving in markets from January-February 2026. Lower Market Arrivals Currently, arrivals in most turmeric markets are limited, except in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra (Hingoli, Basmat, Nanded), where supply is relatively better. Due to low arrivals, auctions in Sangli market have been reduced to three days a week. Daily arrivals by market: Hingoli/Basmat: 4,000-5,000 bags Nanded: 2,000-2,500 bags Nizamabad: 5-7 bags Erode: 1,000-1,500 bags Duggirala: 400-500 bags Stock Situation Traders estimate that the total turmeric stock across producing and consumption centers is around 36-38 lakh (3.6-3.8 million) bags. Breakdown by region: Marathwada: 12-13 lakh bags Nizamabad: 4-5 lakh bags Erode: 3-4 lakh bags Sangli: 3-4 lakh bags Duggirala/Warangal: 3-4 lakh bags Consumption centers: 7-8 lakh bags Prices Under Pressure, but Upside Expected Currently, turmeric prices are under pressure due to sluggish domestic and export demand. In the Delhi market, turmeric (single polish, gatta) is priced at ₹130-132 per kg. Sources suggest that prices may fluctuate by ₹2-3 per kg during August, but are likely to rise in September-October as export and domestic demand pick up. Export Performance Turmeric exports during the first two months (April-May) of the 2025-26 season registered an 8% increase in quantity and a 2% increase in value compared to last year. April- May 2025: 34,162.28 tons exported, ₹505.38 crore earned April-May 2024: 31,524.59 tons exported, ₹496.67 crore earned 2024-25 full year: 176,325.34 tons exported, ₹2,885.39 crore revenue 2023-24 full year: 162,018.46 tons exported, ₹1,875.86 crore revenue Conclusion With increased sowing and favorable weather, the upcoming turmeric crop is expected to be significantly larger. While the market is currently experiencing slow movement, higher export demand and improved domestic buying in the coming months may support a price rise. Farmers and traders should prepare for a potentially active market in the later part of the year.
