Kharif 2025: Higher Output Expected in Tur and Moong; Urad Production Likely to Decline Sharply
Preliminary crop estimates for the Kharif 2025 season have been released, based on average yields from the past five years and the sown area as of August 15, 2025. Tur (Arhar) has been sown over 42.20 lakh hectares, with a five-year average yield of 848 kg per hectare. Based on this, production is expected to reach 35.79 lakh tonnes, which is 1.62 lakh tonnes more than last years 34.17 lakh tonnes. Moong is also expected to perform better this year. With an average yield of 456 kg per hectare and sowing over 33.70 lakh hectares, estimated production stands at 15.37 lakh tonnes, 3.83 lakh tonnes higher than last year's 11.54 lakh tonnes. In contrast, Urad is showing a sharp decline. Despite sowing over 20.82 lakh hectares, with an average yield of 555 kg per hectare, production is expected to be only 11.56 lakh tonnes4.48 lakh tonnes less than last year's 16.04 lakh tonnes. These estimates are based on current sowing data and historical yield averages. However, actual production may vary depending on weather conditions and other factors during the grain formation and maturation stages. Currently, Moong and Urad crops are in the flowering and pod formation stage. Weather conditions during the grain-filling and ripening period will be crucial in determining the final yield.
