India Opens Wheat Gates 3 MMT Export Move Shakes Global Markets
The Government of India has approved the export of 2.5 million metric tons (MMT) of wheat along with 0.5 MMT of wheat products in a strategic move aimed at supporting farmers and maintaining stability in the domestic market. This decision comes in view of the strong wheat availability across the country. For the 2025–26 season, private traders and companies are expected to hold approximately 7.5 MMT of wheat stocks, which is 3.2 MMT higher than last year. The government has also assured that national food security will remain fully protected, with 18.2 MMT of wheat projected to be available in government warehouses (FCI) as of April 1, 2026, sufficient to meet domestic consumption requirements. The wheat cultivation area has expanded significantly, rising from 32.804 million hectares last year to around 33.417 million hectares in 2026. This growth reflects farmers’ strong confidence in the assured Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the government procurement system, as well as expectations of a good harvest.
