Severe Weather in North India: Threat of Heavy Rain, Storms, and Hailstorms
Weather in North India is set to take another turn. After a short break, pre-monsoon activity is likely to pick up once again. Between March 15 and 17, the first significant rainfall of the season was recorded across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and northern Rajasthan, and now similar conditions are expected to become active again. Due to a western disturbance and a cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan, dense cloud cover has already developed over western Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana. These systems will gradually move forward, affecting Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and north-central parts of Madhya Pradesh. From March 18 to 20, widespread rainfall along with thunderstorms and strong winds is expected in these regions. With this change in weather, strong winds, lightning, and the possibility of hailstorms in some areas cannot be ruled out. A drop in temperatures in the upper atmosphere is creating favorable conditions for hail, which may prove harmful to crops. One positive impact of this rainfall will be a check on the recent rise in temperatures. In the coming days, daytime conditions will remain slightly warm, while nights are expected to be relatively cool, giving a typical transitional feel to the month of March. People are advised to remain cautious over the next three days, especially due to the risk of strong winds, thunderstorms, and lightning.
