Country Weather Update: Indication of Relief from Pre-Monsoon Rain and Thunderstorms Amid Severe Heatwave

At present, severe heat and heatwave conditions continue across the country, with temperatures in several regions reaching between 45C and 47C. In the early days of April, good pre-monsoon rainfall and thunderstorm activity were observed in parts of northwest, central, and eastern India. However, after that, the weather turned largely dry. Due to this prolonged dry and clear weather, temperatures rose rapidly, pushing mercury levels to dangerous extremes in many cities. In the past 24 hours, several cities in Vidarbha, Rajasthan, and central India recorded extreme temperatures. Places like Akola, Amravati, and Banda recorded temperatures above 46C, while Barmer, Jaisalmer, Nagpur, and Prayagraj saw temperatures crossing 45C. This persistent heat has resulted in severe discomfort and heatwave conditions for people. However, signs of a weather change are now emerging. From the evening of April 27, pre-monsoon activities are likely to begin in parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, southern Uttar Pradesh, and northern Madhya Pradesh. During this period, dust storms, strong winds, and thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall may occur. In some areas, temperatures may rise slightly before this change begins. From April 28 onwards, rainfall and thunderstorm activity may intensify across many parts of North India, the Western Himalayan region, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh. This change in weather is expected to bring a drop in temperatures and provide relief from the intense heat. Further, from April 29, pre-monsoon activity may extend to South India as well, bringing rainfall and thunderstorms to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. However, parts of western Rajasthan, Gujarat, Konkan-Goa, and central Maharashtra may continue to experience dry and hot conditions. May is generally the peak of summer heat, but intermittent pre-monsoon thunderstorms are expected to provide temporary relief and prevent temperatures from rising excessively for long periods.
