Tripling Maize Exports Provide Fresh Support to the Market

Indias maize exports are witnessing a significant surge in the 2025-26 marketing year. During the first five months of the season (November 2025 to March 2026) the country exported nearly 996,000 tonnes of maize, more than three times the volume shipped during the same period last year. Strong demand from Bangladesh, Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan has prompted trade estimates for full-year exports to be revised upward to 2.4 million tonnes. Relatively weak domestic prices, lower ocean freight costs, and competitive Indian maize prices have helped boost export demand. If current price competitiveness continues, exports are expected to remain strong for the rest of the marketing year. On the production front, maize sowing for the 2026 kharif season has reached 569,000 hectares as of June 19, compared with 534,000 hectares during the same period last year. Government projections indicate that maize production in 2025-26 could reach a record 55 million tonnes, supported by expanded acreage and improved yields. Despite stronger exports, domestic maize prices have remained below the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of ₹2,410 per quintal. Export demand has improved market sentiment, but average prices continue to trade below last year levels. Market Outlook Strong export demand is likely to provide near-term support to maize prices. Feed industry consumption and stock liquidation may further strengthen the market. A normal monsoon and favorable crop conditions could limit major price rallies during the new crop season. Looking ahead to 2026-27, tighter domestic supplies and growing demand could keep the longer-term outlook constructive.
