Despite receiving slightly below-normal monsoon rainfall, farmers in Belagavi district have delivered an impressive Kharif sowing performance. Against a target of 7.52 lakh hectares, sowing has been completed on nearly 7.16 lakh hectares, achieving around 95% of the planned area. Agriculture officials attribute this progress to the timely availability of farm inputs and favorable field conditions. The district has received 341 mm of rainfall so far, just 4% below the normal average of 354 mm. The marginal shortfall has had little impact on sowing operations. Good progress has been recorded in major crops such as tur (pigeon pea), groundnut, and paddy, while soybean, moong, urad, and sugarcane have exceeded their respective sowing targets. This reflects farmers ability to adapt well despite slightly weaker monsoon conditions. Performance at the taluka level has also been encouraging. Savadatti and Bailhongal recorded sowing beyond their targets, while Kittur and Nippani achieved full target coverage. Chikkodi, Raibag, Hukkeri, Khanapur, and several other talukas also reported high sowing levels, indicating a strong Kharif season across the district. According to the Agriculture Department, adequate stocks of seeds and fertilizers were ensured well before the sowing season. Most of the available seed stock has already been distributed to farmers, while sufficient quantities of urea and DAP remain available. Officials believe that if weather conditions remain favorable during the crop growth period, Belagavi is well positioned to achieve a healthy Kharif harvest this year.
