Cyclone Mocha to Intensify Into "Very Severe" Storm Today, Bengal On Alert

Cyclone Mocha will likely cross the Southeast Bangladesh and North Myanmar coasts between Cox's Bazar (Bangladesh) and Kyaukpyu (Myanmar) around noon on May 14 as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, with a maximum sustained wind speed of 150-160 kmph gusting to 175 kmph. In addition, a trough runs from cyclonic circulation associated with the very severe cyclonic storm "Mocha" from Central and the adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal to the South Andhra Pradesh coast. Under the collective influence of these systems, Andaman and Nicobar Islands may witness rainfall over most places, with heavy to very heavy downpours at isolated places on May 12 and heavy rain at isolated places on May 13-14. Similarly, rainfall at most places accompanied by heavy falls at isolated places may impact Tripura and Mizoram on May 13, while heavy to very heavy rain is possible at isolated places over the region on May 14. Nagaland, Manipur and South Assam are also in for rains at many places and heavy rainfall over isolated areas on May 14. Furthermore, fishermen, ships, boats and trawlers are advised not to venture into the Central Bay of Bengal and North Andaman Sea till May 14 and into the Northeast Bay of Bengal from May 12-14. Those over the Central Bay of Bengal and North Andaman Sea are advised to return to the coast. Additionally, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with light or moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall may pelt over Kerala and Mahe during the next five days. Similar conditions are expected over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on May 12. Maximum temperatures are very likely to rise by 3-5°C over most parts of the country during the next two days. Due to humid air and high temperature, uncomfortably hot weather is possible over Konkan during the next two days, Odisha during the next five days, and Kerala and Tamil Nadu on May 13-14. Heatwave conditions may prevail in isolated pockets over Gujarat state, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, Bihar and West Bengal on May 12, Rajasthan on May 12-13 and over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from May 13-16.
