Sugar production expected to increase in the country, industry organization demands to export 10 lakh tonnes
The sugar crushing season has reached its final stage. So far, about 300 lakh tonnes of sugar has been produced in the country. Sugar production in the current sugar season is estimated at 340 lakh tonnes whereas earlier the sugar production was estimated at 330.5 lakh tonnes. Due to higher sugar production in Maharashtra than expected, there is expected to be a surplus sugar production in the country this year. Based on this estimate, the Sugar Industry Association is demanding to export 10 lakh tonnes of sugar. By combining last season's stock of about 56 lakh tonnes and this time's net sugar production, the sugar stock in the country will be 376 lakh tonnes while the sugar consumption in the country is estimated at 285 lakh tonnes. Thus, surplus stock is expected to be 91 lakh tonnes in the marketing year ending 30 September 2024.
