Heavy Rainfall Damaging Pulses Crops
Recent heavy rainfall has significantly impacted pulse crops, particularly pigeon pea (arhar), in several states including Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. In Karnataka, producers are concerned about excessive rainfall leading to waterlogging in various areas, which could result in diseases such as Phytophthora root rot affecting the pigeon pea crop. The rainfall has also affected other crops like urad and moong, which were ready for harvest in some districts. Last week, there was heavy rainfall in pigeon pea-producing regions of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana. Farmers have urged the government to assess the impact of the rainfall on crops and provide relief measures. They have indicated that the rainfall alone might have affected around 200,000 hectares of standing pigeon pea crops in Kalburgi. Karnataka officials have acknowledged that while some impact is expected due to waterlogging in parts of Kalburgi, the recent rainfall is being seen as more beneficial than harmful for the pigeon pea crop.
